Omega first manufacturer on the moon
Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch was the only watch that passed a series of tests in NASA's auspices. The aim was to produce the most suitable watch to use for space travel. On the case back of the Moonwatch engravement says "Flight qualified by NASA for all manned space missions". Most exclusive watch makers today use a very scratch resistant glass, sapphire. Although Omega has chosen to use sapphire for most of their models an exception is made with a number of watches in the Speedmaster series. Instead they use Hesalite - a material which, if broken, do not go to pieces and is therefore is not as dangerous in space. Hesalite is compared to sapphire, however not that scratch resistant.
