In the middle of the 1900s, Oris introduced an alarm clock with an eight day power reserve. These clocks are now very popular among collectors. At this time, Oris had over 600 employees and produced around 2 million watches and more than a hundred thousand alarm clocks per year.
Oris in the jazz world
Oris has chosen to dedicate a number of watches to some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians. Among others: Charlie "The Bird" Parker, Louis "King of Jazz" Armstrong, Duke "The Duke" Ellington and Frank "Old Blue Eyes" Sinatra have several watches dedicated to them.
Hollywood
Many actors have worn Oris watches in various films. This includes:
- Nicolas Cage, "Eight Millimeter"
- Meg Ryan, "Kate & Leopold"
- Gwyneth Paltrow, "Bounce"
- Harrison Ford, "Random Hearts"
Oris and sport
Like many other watch brands, Oris is well-represented in the sporting world. On the motor-sports side, they sponsor the classic Formula 1, where they are one of the main sponsors for the successful BMW Williams-team, along with the endurance racing WEC where the Oris logo can be seen on the futuristic Audi sports car.
Oris watches are also strongly represented in diving, including a special watch which was made for the world’s greatest free-diver Carlos Coste. In 2013, Oris launched the innovative Aquis Depth Gauge diving watch, which was the first mechanical watch with a water-pressure based depth gauge. One channel in the watch dial lets water in and the lower the depth, the higher the water-pressure, which is translated onto a scale which shows the actual depth in metres.
Oris pilots’ watches have long been popular among aviation enthusiasts because of their easy-to-read dials, reliable design and reasonable prices. Since 2013, Oris has been a sponsor of the world’s top air-racing league, The "Oris Swiss Air Racing Team", a collaboration which has given rise to a variety of special models.
